The Sitar is one of the most soulful and recognized instruments of Indian Classical Music.
The word “Sitar” originates from the Persian term “Seh Taar”, which literally means “three strings.”
While it was originally designed with three main strings, modern sitars now have 18 to 21 strings, including both main and sympathetic (resonant) strings, which create its rich and mesmerizing sound.
Over the years, great maestros like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee have elevated the Sitar to international fame. Their mastery not only showcased the beauty of Indian music but also inspired musicians across the globe to explore its deep emotional resonance.
However, unlike instruments such as the keyboard, tabla, or vocal music, finding a qualified sitar teacher is not always easy. Many aspiring learners are unable to find proper guidance and training in their nearby areas.
Keeping this in mind, Anhad Naad Foundation took the initiative to make Sitar education more accessible to everyone in Dwarka and beyond. We are deeply grateful to Shri Uma Shankar Ji, a renowned All India Radio Artist and respected Sitar maestro, who graciously accepted our request to conduct Sitar Classes at our center.
Under his expert guidance, students now have the opportunity to:
- Learn both basic and advanced techniques of the Sitar
- Understand raga structure, rhythm, and improvisation
- Experience Guru–Shishya Parampara style learning
- Participate in performances and examinations
