When and how music originated, various scholars have explained it on their own religious, psychological and natural basis. Here we will try to throw light about the origin of music on natural, religious and psychological basis.
1.1 Natural approach
Many scholars have called nature the soul of music.
According to Hindi literature, seven notes of music were composed on the basis of the sound of different animals and birds. According to Pandit Damodar:-
Shadja from peacock, Rishabh from Chatak, Gandhara from goat, Medium from Kraunch bird, Pancham from Koel, Dhaivata from frog, and Nishad from elephant, and it is also written in Vrihaddesi of Matang Rishi that-
“Shadj Vadati Peacock, Rishabh Chatko Vadetu
Anja Vaditi Gandhara, Krauncha Vadati Madhyama:
Flower Simple Black Kokil Panchamo Vadetu
Pravartkale tu santaprte dhaivat dradshe vadetu
Always Cha and Devi Nishad Vadetu – Gaja:”
In this regard, a legend is prevalent in France that – there lived a bird on a mountain named Kohkaf, which had seven holes in its beak, from which seven types of sounds came out due to the influence of the wind, which were later considered to be seven notes of music.
This bird was called Atishajan in France and Phanix in Greece, but today no such bird or any other information is found.
In the same sequence, the famous Arab historian Olasinism has also originated music from a bird named Bulbul in his book “Music of the World”.
There is also a story prevalent in Persian about the birth of music that –
Hazrat Musa the Prophet was traveling in a boat and he found a stone in the boat, at the same time an angel named Jibril came and told the Prophet that you should always keep this stone with you. After some time, he went out for a walk in the forest and he felt very thirsty, then suddenly a stream of water started falling on that stone and that stone became seven pieces and seven streams started coming out of it and separated from all the streams. A different sound started coming out which the Prophet remembered and later on these seven sounds became seven notes.
If seen in this way, without hesitation – this principle can be considered true, but from the point of view of logic, it may also happen that man has collected some sounds in his mind through his experience, which later on. The seven notes of music have become.
1.2 Religious outlook
Many scholars have expressed their views about the birth of music according to their own religious beliefs,
According to Hindu religion, music is originated by Lord Brahma, Brahma ji gave this art to Lord Shiva and Shiva ji gave this art to Mother Saraswati. After which Mother Saraswati gave the knowledge of musical art to Narad Rishi ji, Narad ji gave this knowledge to the Gandharvas, Kinnars and Apsaras of heaven. From there, sages like Bharat Muni, Hanuman etc. became proficient in this art and propagated this art on the earth.
But according to Pandit Ahobal and Pandit Damodar ji, Bharat Muni got the education of music through Brahma ji.
But according to Pandit Ahobal, Bharat Muni received the education of music through Brahma ji, and Pandit Damodar has also considered the beginning of music through Brahma ji.
According to another text, Narad ji practiced yoga for many years, due to which Lord Shiva taught music to Narad ji and seeing the sleeping posture of Mother Parvati ji, made Rudra Veena on the basis of her limbs, and his after the origin of the five ragas of the five faces, then the sixth raga originated from the mouth of Parvati.
Since Shiva’s face was east, west, north, south and sky-facing, respectively, five ragas Bhairav, Hindol, Megh, Deepak and Shri raga were born, Kaushiki raga originated from Parvati’s mouth.
OM(ॐ)
Some scholars have considered the origin of music from OM, Aum has contained three powers and words in itself, A, U, M.
The word A is considered to be a symbol of birth and origin, “U” is considered to be a symbol of holder and protection and the word “M” is considered to be a symbol of merger and OM(ॐ)is also the seed mantra of the Vedas and if seen in this way, the creation originated from the Aum mantra and from this the sound originated, thus the origin of both the sound and the word is considered to be from OM(ॐ)and OM(ॐ) is also the seed mantra of the Vedas and in this way, the creation of the universe originated from the mantra OM(ॐ) and from this the sound of the sound originated, thus the origin of both the sound and the word is believed to be from OM(ॐ)
Regarding the birth of music, the opinion of the thinkers of Europe is more visible,
1.3 Psychological Approach
According to James Long – Man first learned to walk, speak, laugh, cry etc., then music was born to express his feelings,
Some scholars have also believed that humans expressed their feelings by imitating different sounds, and these changed over time to become the notes of music.
Scientifically speaking, the origin of music is the result of sound movement, when two objects collide with each other, it vibrates the surrounding air. This vibration vibrates our core, due to which our consciousness experiences sound. Out of this sound, which sound is good for our ears to hear, it was considered as a useful sound of music.
Thus we see that
