In my opinion, if we think about this carefully, both have their own advantages and disadvantages. The biggest plus point of “Gharanedar” music education was that people could learn even the smallest details of music by staying with the Guru for years, because once the Guru accepted you as his disciple, it was the Guru’s responsibility to give you everything in music education that he had. But the biggest problem was how to meet the Guru. Even if you met him, it was not necessary whether he would teach you music or not. Because most of the Gurus used to teach music to either their son, daughter, son-in-law or their relatives. As far as I have known, the Guru-disciple tradition and gharanedar tradition have become more prevalent since the Mughal period. During this period, most of the good artists were musicians in the Mughal court. Because they were court musicians, their living expenses were also borne by the court and since they lived in the court, it became difficult for common people to meet them. This could be the reason that it had become difficult for common people to learn music in the gharanadar music system, which resulted in people getting distanced from Indian classical music.
The biggest advantage of the coming of the trend of music academy or music school these days is that now people are slowly starting to know about the notes and rhythm of music again or are trying to know because unless we have the basic knowledge of anything, how can we know about its usefulness, and as all things change with time, in the same way in this fast-paced world, music has also changed its place from the Guru-Shishya tradition to music academy and music school, this definitely caused the disadvantage that there may be a decrease in good artists who can handle our old heritage, but it is also true that now music is not only in the court but has come back among the common people again.
